What to do When the Delivery Truck Arrives

It is important that you or someone you can depend on be there when the delivery truck arrives, so that you can be sure that not only does the delivery contain the right food items but also spot any problems.

Plan for the arrival

Actually, this needs to be done BEFORE the truck shows up. Make sure you have sufficient freezer and refrigerator space and other storage space to handle the food items arriving on the delivery truck.

Check the Invoice

Make sure that the invoice matches up with the purchase order - quantity, price, specific brands, grades/quality, and so on.

Check Food Items

Inspect for damages. If you see indications that there has been a problem with frozen items, i.e., thawed and then re-frozen (e.g., you see crystals, excessive ice in containers, or solid ice areas), refuse delivery. Items like this cannot be safely used. Be on the look-out for insects or rodents (or signs thereof).

Check temperature

Check the temperature of refrigerated and frozen foods, especially eggs, dairy products, poultry, fish, or fresh meat.

Problems

If there is a problem with the invoice, if there are damages, or you have rejected certain food items, bring it to the attention of the driver BEFORE HE/SHE LEAVES; have him/her sign or initial where a problem has been indicated by you.

Mark food items for storage

Each food item or container of food items needs to be marked with the delivery and use-by dates. Doing this will make it easier down the road in making sure food items are being used in the correct order.
